In this blog post, learn about our upcoming Rheinwerk Course entitled SAP Business Data Cloud: Architecture, Data Engineering, and Data Products from the course instructor, Shakthi Ramalaxmi.
Shakthi has a decade of experience as an SAP analytics professional, working across SAP BW, SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud, and SAP Business Data Cloud. She has successfully led numerous end-to-end implementations across various domains, including BI and planning, and currently works on SAP Business Data Cloud architecture and data product design in a live enterprise implementation. In addition to her consulting work, she is a huge advocate of training and knowledge sharing to help both individuals and organizations maximize the benefits of their SAP analytics journey.
Check out her video introduction below and read on to learn from her what this series will teach you!
1 What Topic Does This Series Cover?
This course is a two-day introduction to SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP's platform for bringing enterprise data together, enriching it, and making it available for analytics.
Day 1 sets the architectural foundation: why the platform came about, how its layers fit together, how data is stored and processed, and where SAP Databricks, delta lake, and the medallion architecture come into the picture.
Day 2 turns to the practical side: how data products are defined, built, and managed in SAP Datasphere, how delta sharing moves data across platforms, and how a complete flow runs from SAP S/4HANA through to consumption in SAP Analytics Cloud.
2 Will This Series Give Me Technical Skills or Foundational Knowledge (or Both)?
Mostly foundational, with a strong practical orientation. The aim is that you leave understanding the platform's architecture and the reasoning behind it, and able to make sound design decisions about data products, storage, and sharing. Sessions include walkthroughs and recorded demonstrations so you can see how the pieces behave in a real system, but this is not a hands-on lab course. Provisioning and configuration, advanced SAP Databricks development, and AI or machine learning scenarios are deliberately out of scope, and the time is spent instead on the concepts and choices that matter most when you first meet the platform.
3 What Will I Specifically Learn in This Series?
You'll learn to do the following:
- Describe SAP Business Data Cloud's architecture, positioning, and key components, including how it evolved from SAP BW and SAP Datasphere.
- Explain how data is stored and processed across the foundation layer and the SAP Datasphere layer, using a SAP HANA Cloud data lake and object store.
- Understand where SAP Databricks, delta lake, and the medallion architecture fit into data engineering on the platform.
- Distinguish SAP-managed from custom data products, and design, manage, and extend custom data products in SAP Datasphere.
- Work with delta sharing and understand how it integrates with SAP Databricks and external tools.
- Trace an end-to-end flow from SAP S/4HANA into SAP Business Data Cloud and onward into SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud.
The two days are designed to build on each other, so the second session's practical work rests on the architecture established in the first.
4 What Should I Already Know Before Taking This Series?
You'll get the most out of the course if you already have a working knowledge of SAP BW and SAP Datasphere concepts, along with general familiarity with data modelling and data integration. You don't need prior exposure to SAP Business Data Cloud itself, and you don't need to be a Databricks specialist. The course is aimed at SAP data engineers and analytics professionals, BI and analytics consultants, and solution architects designing landscapes that will include SAP Business Data Cloud.
5 What Are Your Qualifications to Teach This Series?
I have a decade of experience in SAP business intelligence and analytics, working across SAP BW, SAP Datasphere, and SAP Analytics Cloud, and I've led end-to-end implementations in BI and planning across a range of industries. My current work centers on SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Datasphere, covering architecture governance, data product design, and testing the platform's capabilities in a live enterprise implementation. That means much of what I'll cover comes from questions I've had to answer in practice rather than from documentation alone. Alongside project work, I regularly deliver training, and I've previously taught the SAP Analytics Cloud course for SAP PRESS.
