# How to Choose SAP Training: 7 Things to Look For

![SAP PRESS](https://blog.sap-press.com/hubfs/Twitter_profile_pic.svg) by [SAP PRESS](https://blog.sap-press.com/author/sap-press) on October 02, 2026

A free learning journey, a two-hour tutorial, a four-hour live class, and a 700-page book can all claim to teach you SAP.

They don't teach you in the same way. They cover different parts of SAP, at different depths, and only some give you a system to practice in. From the outside, they can look interchangeable, which is how people end up choosing based on price or whatever appeared first in a search.

The better question isn't which resource is best. It's which resource is best for what you need to do. Seven criteria make that easier to answer.

## Key SAP Learning Options

Below are seven different platforms people use to learn SAP:

- [SAP Learning](https://learning.sap.com/), SAP's free public learning portal
- [SAP Learning Hub](https://www.sap.com/training-certification/learning-hub.html), the paid subscription tier
- [SAP Developer Center](https://developers.sap.com/), tutorials, trials, and sample code for developers
- [SAP Community](https://community.sap.com/), the Q&A forum, blogs, groups, and events
- SAP's YouTube channels, including [SAP](https://www.youtube.com/@SAP) for product news, [SAP Developers](https://www.youtube.com/@sapdevs), [SAP Community](https://www.youtube.com/SAPCommunities), and [SAP EA Community](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3YCS71NjU1VaDhDDLwfWNA) for enterprise architecture
- [SAP PRESS](https://www.sap-press.com/) books, e-books, and the subscription library, which we publish
- [Rheinwerk Courses](https://www.sap-press.com/online-courses/), our live and on-demand instructor-led training

Let’s now dive into the seven criteria that we can compare them by.

## 1. Structure and Sequencing

It’s important to determine whether a resource is a standalone piece of information, or whether it’s embedded into a larger learning context and thus tells you what to learn next when you’re done with it.

SAP Learning is particularly strong here. Its learning journeys are ordered paths built around a role or a solution, so a new [SAP BTP](https://learning.sap-press.com/sap-btp) assignment comes with a ready-made sequence rather than a search box. Books impose a different kind of order, chapter by chapter through a single subject, which helps once you know which subject you need.

Everything else assumes you've already decided what to study. A developer tutorial solves one task, an SAP Community thread answers one question, and a YouTube channel shows you whatever went up most recently.

Open the resource and see whether it can tell you what comes after today's topic.

## 2. Depth of Coverage

Every resource claims depth, and this is easy to test. Take the narrowest real thing you have to deliver (document splitting configuration, an ATC transport gate, a CDS view with an association) and see how far the material follows you. Coverage of flagship topics is thorough almost everywhere. Coverage of the specific problem on your desk next week is where resources begin to stand apart.

For example: A book has room the other formats don't. [*Configuring SAP S/4HANA Finance*](https://www.sap-press.com/configuring-sap-s4hana-finance_5920/) by Stoil Jotev runs 744 pages, and [*Materials Management with SAP S/4HANA*](https://www.sap-press.com/materials-management-with-sap-s4hana_5835/) by Jawad Akhtar and Martin Murray runs 1,018. That length buys you the settings, dependencies, and edge cases a course cuts for time, so the book stays useful long after you've read it: when an unfamiliar configuration screen turns up six months into a project, the answer is usually a quick trip to the index. Developer tutorials go deep on a single task and don't pretend to go further. SAP Learning varies by topic, so check it subject by subject instead of judging the platform as a whole.

Search for your narrowest question before you commit to anything.

## 3. Hands-On System Access

Reading a configuration step and performing it are separate skills, and most SAP training covers only the first. SAP Learning Hub is one of the main options for structured learning with practice-system access. The subscription includes practice systems preloaded with exercise data, with system hours allocated rather than unlimited, so the terms for the edition you’re planning to use are worth reading closely. The SAP Developer Center offers trials suited to SAP BTP and development work, and students enrolled at a university can get the free student edition of SAP Learning Hub.

SAP PRESS books and Rheinwerk Courses don't include a practice system. Rheinwerk Courses are taught over live instructor screenshares, so you can watch the configuration happen in a real system without working in one yourself.

Check whether what you're buying includes somewhere to practice. If it doesn't, work out where else you'll get it.

## 4. Who Wrote or Taught It

Authorship takes a minute to check and tells you how much to trust what follows. SAP PRESS books name their authors and describe what those authors have implemented during their careers. Rheinwerk Courses are taught by working practitioners, several of whom have written SAP PRESS titles, and some of whom run training that appears in SAP's own catalog. SAP's official material is authoritative on what SAP intends a product to do, which is what you want when the goal is an exam or alignment with the documentation. They are not very good, however, at explaining what *doesn’t* (yet) work as intended.

SAP Community, on the other hand, is the one place here where nobody vets the answer before you read it. Responses run from a consultant who solved your exact problem last month to a guess someone posted in 2019. Look up the author or instructor before you follow their instructions.

## 5. How Current It Stays

SAP releases quickly in [SAP S/4HANA](https://learning.sap-press.com/sap-s4hana-overview-benefits) Cloud, SAP BTP, AI, and development tooling, and material written two releases ago can have you configuring something that no longer ships.

Official channels are first with announcements, and YouTube is the fastest of them for seeing a new feature demonstrated. SAP Community can be particularly useful for understanding the gap between documentation and real-world behavior after an upgrade. Books run a release cycle behind and catch up in revised editions, which is why the edition number matters more than the original publication date. An instructor teaching next month is teaching the current release.

Find the last-updated date, the edition number, or the recording date before you commit any time.

## 6. Whether You Keep Access

Every resource here gives you a different kind of access, and that difference tends to matter about six months later.

An SAP Learning Hub subscription ends and takes its content with it. Print books and e-books are bought once and kept, while the SAP PRESS Subscription works on the rental model. Rheinwerk Courses put session recordings and slide decks on the learning platform after the live date, so the course outlasts the session. SAP's free channels stay free, though content gets reorganized and retired without warning.

Finding one specific detail again after a few weeks belongs to the same question. That's trivial in an index, workable in a searchable portal, and close to impossible in a 50-minute recording you watched last spring.

Ask whether you'll still have this material in six months, and whether you'd be able to find the one paragraph you need in it.

## 7. Certification Alignment

SAP writes the exams, which makes SAP's own material the reference point when certification is the goal. SAP Learning Hub is the direct route, bundling guided content, expert-led live sessions, and four certification exam attempts per year into the subscription. SAP PRESS publishes certification guides organized by exam area, which work well for review and gap-checking alongside SAP's preparation.

Exams and projects reward different knowledge, though. An exam tests whether you can demonstrate the knowledge required by the certification. A project tests whether you can apply that knowledge in a particular business and system context. A go-live tests whether you made the right decisions and can explain what it broke three modules away, which is the ground configuration books and instructor-led courses are built on.

Check that the resource names the current exam code, since SAP retires and renumbers them.

## How the Options Compare

| **Resource** | **Cost model** | **Strongest on** | **Weakest on** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SAP Learning | Free | Structure and sequencing | Depth, which varies by topic |
| SAP Learning Hub | Subscription | System access, certification | Keeping access |
| SAP Developer Center | Free | System access, depth per task | Structure and sequencing |
| SAP Community | Free | Currency | Authorship, structure |
| SAP YouTube channels | Free | Currency | Retrieval, structure |
| SAP PRESS | Purchase or subscription | Depth, authorship, retrieval | System access |
| Rheinwerk Courses | Purchase or subscription | Authorship, live instruction | System access, catalog size |

## What to Use When

Free and paid material each have their own jobs here. SAP's free channels are strong on sequencing, single tasks, and staying current. Paid material gives you a named expert, a system to work in, and a reference you can return to, whether you're learning a whole subject from the start or checking one setting in the middle of a project.

- *If you don't know where to start*: SAP Learning
- *If you're preparing for certification*: SAP Learning Hub and an SAP PRESS certification guide
- *If you need to solve one development problem*: SAP Developer Center, SAP Community, or the relevant chapter of an SAP PRESS book
- *If you need to stay current*: SAP's YouTube channels, SAP Community, and the SAP PRESS Blog
- *If you need to learn an entire subject*: SAP PRESS book or Rheinwerk Course
- *If you need a reference to keep open while you work*: SAP PRESS book or e-book
- *If you need hands-on practice*: SAP Learning Hub, SAP developer trial, or your organization's sandbox
- *If you need live instruction*: Rheinwerk Courses or SAP Learning Hub

## Frequently Asked Questions

**What should I look for in an SAP training provider?**

Seven things: whether it sequences your learning, how deep it goes on a specific topic, whether it includes system access, who wrote or taught it, how current it stays, whether you keep access afterward, and how well it maps to certification. Few resources score well on all seven, so most people combine two or three.

**Is SAP Learning free?**

Yes. SAP Learning includes free self-paced courses, videos, and Learning Journeys. Premium content sits behind an SAP Learning Hub subscription.

**Is SAP Learning Hub worth it?**

It depends on whether you need a practice system. The content advantage over free SAP Learning is real but modest, while the hands-on system access and the four bundled certification attempts per year are what justify the price for most buyers. University students should first check whether they qualify for the free student edition, which includes two exam attempts.

**Can I learn SAP without access to a system?**

You can learn the concepts, the configuration logic, and the reasoning behind a design decision. Building the muscle memory takes a system, which means SAP Learning Hub, a developer trial, or a sandbox at work.

**What Are Rheinwerk Course?**

Rheinwerk Courses are live, instructor-led online training sessions taught by experienced SAP practitioners. Formats range from focused sessions to one-day and multi-day courses, with topics including SAP S/4HANA, ABAP, SAP BTP, SAP Integration Suite, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Signavio, and more. Recordings and slide decks are included, so participants can review the material afterward. Several course instructors are also SAP PRESS authors, giving learners the choice between learning from an expert live or going deeper into a topic through a book.

**Is SAP PRESS an official SAP training provider?**

No. SAP PRESS is a publishing imprint of Rheinwerk Publishing. SAP provides the software, the documentation, the certifications, and the systems. SAP PRESS and Rheinwerk Courses provide long-form coverage of individual topics, in print and in the classroom, from people who have implemented them.

**Where to Start**

Most of these criteria are really asking what you need the material to do after you've read it. Someone three weeks out from an exam and someone three weeks out from a go-live will land on different answers, and the seven questions above are the fastest way to work out which one you are. Whatever you settle on, get access to a system before you touch a client's environment.

## Conclusion

The best SAP learning strategy isn't necessarily one resource. Use official SAP resources to understand the platform and stay current, community resources to learn from other practitioners, hands-on environments to build practical skills, and SAP PRESS books or Rheinwerk Courses when you need deeper, structured instruction. The right combination depends on where you are in your SAP journey—and what you need to do next.
